An orchestrated upgrade is where the version of ESXi is uplifted eg 5.0 to 5.1 rather than just patched. The orchestration places each host into maintenance mode, DRS migrating VMs as needed, and them updates them. The same can be done for VM Hardware and Tools after ESXi uplift if required.

Issue: Connection Loss with Update Manager Server or vCenter Server in a Single vCenter Server System
Resolution: If vCenter looses network connectivity for 15-20 seconds then the plugin gets disabled, when network connectivity is restored or service is restarted re-enable the plugin.
Issue: Connection Loss with Update Manager Server or vCenter Server in a Connected Group in vCenter Linked Mode
Resolution: In linked mode, Update Manager plug-in shows as enabled, when network connectivity is restored or service is restarted, you have to disable and enable the plug-in after the connection is restored.
Action: Gather Update Manager Log Bundles
Steps: On VMware Update Manager server Start > All Programs > VMware > Generate Update Manager
Action: Gather Update Manager and vCenter Server Log Bundles where they co-locate
Steps: Start > All Programs > VMware > Generate vCenter Server log bundle
Issue: Log Bundle Is Not Generated
Steps: cscript C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\Infrastructure\Update Manager\vum-support.wsf /n
Issue: Host Extension Remediation or Staging Fails Due to Missing Prerequisites
Resolution: To see which prerequisites are missing, in Compliance View select Tasks & Events > Events then manually resolve the missing prerequisites.
Issue: No Baseline Updates Available
Resolution: Misconfigured proxy settings or network issue
Issue: All Updates in Compliance Reports Are Displayed as Not Applicable
Resolution: Examine the server logs for scan tasks that are marked as failed. Then retry the scan operation.
Issue: All Updates in Compliance Reports Are Unknown
Resolution: Such a condition typically indicates an error at the start of the scanning process. This might also indicate that no scan occurred or that the object is not supported for scan. Schedule a scan or manually start a scan.
Issue: VMware Tools Upgrade Fails if VMware Tools Is Not Installed
Resolution: Install VMware Tools
Issue: ESX/ESXi Host Scanning Fails
Resolution: After you add a host or a virtual machine to the vSphere inventory, run the VMware vSphere Update Manager Update Download task before performing the scan.
Issue: ESXi Host Upgrade Fails
Resolution: If you see an Agent Deploy failure, make sure that the /tmp directory has at least 10MB of free space. Repeat the remediation process to upgrade the host.
Issue: The Update Manager Repository Cannot Be Deleted
Resolution: File path greater than 255 characters

If you perform a SQLExpress install of VUM it defaults to having no remote access to connect an ODBC connection. Modify the SQL configuration to enable Named Pipes
You can now map an ODBC connection to connect excel or SQL to VUM database using the account you created.
