Objective 6.2 – Troubleshoot CPU and Memory Performance

Knowledge - Identify resxtop/esxtop Metrics Related To Memory & CPU

No better detail can be written than is on Yellow Bricks

Knowledge - Identify vCenter Server Performance Chart metrics related to memory and CPU
There are many metrics which can be viewed via vCenter Server Performance Charts,  by default for CPU,  Usage and Usage in MHz are displayed,  for Memory,  Ballon, Active,  Granted and Consumed are displayed.

These can be changed by use of the Chart Options button.

Skills and Abilities - Troubleshoot ESXi Host and Virtual Machine CPU Performance Issues Using Appropriate Metrics
Skills and Abilities - Troubleshoot ESXi host and Virtual Machine memory performance issues using appropriate metrics
There are several avenues for troubleshooting ESXi Host and VM CPU performance and memory issues, vCenter charts give a easy high level view in realtime, once you spot a potential problem area you can drill down to get more detailed metrics in real time or if problem occurs at a particular time you can schedule a batch collection. When working through the data collected by esxtop use the thresholds above to give an indication of the problem area.

The issues can be caused due to misconfiguration or can relate to the application running on the virtual machine working abnormally.  It is always worth while investigating where possible the guest of the VM using its performance monitoring tools and use this data alongside what you gather from the guest.

Skills and Abilities - Use Hot-Add functionality to resolve identified Virtual Machine CPU and memory performance issues
The concept behind hot-add is to be able to add/remove memory and CPU resources on a virtual machine that is powered-on.

Requires guest OS support,  Microsoft support for hot-add memory can found by OS edition here and hot-add CPU support can be found here.

Support for Hot-Add is not enabled by default for a VM and must be enabled when the VM is in powered off state,  when VM is powered back on then Hot-Add can be used.
